It’s more than just a thread in Rakshabandhan

Thursday, August 2, 2012

There is always the sense of uniqueness, when it’s about the Indian festivals. Rich with cultural and religion values, firmly bound with the traditional rituals, and more importantly, the colorfulness. These elemental presences always construct the bases of Indian festivals and occasions. Families are the pillars of the Indian society, and not surprisingly, the parts of the family values are always there in these celebrations. The togetherness, the cohesion that the family members share with each other is the characteristic feature of the Indian society, and the festivals like Rakshabandhan puts full justice to this unity. The pure and sweet wish that a sister keeps for all the goodness that her brother will receive is the soul of this Rakshabandhan celebration, and this festival only glorifies the strength of the ties that an Indian family is always composed of. In short, this very festival is an excuse of the family reunion.

Each of the Indian festivals has got their roots in the Hindu mythology, and Rakshabandhan is no exception either. Rakhi is a sacred thread embellished with sister's love and affection for her brother. On the day of Rakshabandhan, sisters tie Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers and express their love to them. After receiving the Rakhi from a sister, a brother sincerely takes the responsibility of protecting her sister. In Indian tradition, the frangible thread of Rakhi is considered even stronger than an iron chain as it strongly binds a brother and a sister in the circumference of mutual love and trust. It started with the tale of Bali, the king of the Patala, the kingdom beneath this earth. The legend relates that the mighty Demon king Raja Bali was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. When lord Indra could not counter Bali, he went to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu overthrew Bali to the nether world. Lord Vishnu promised King Bali immortality till he remains in his kingdom, and also that he would guard the kingdom of Patala leaving his own abode in Vaikunth. Godess Laxmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, wished the Lord to be back at Vaikunth. Disguised as a Brahmin woman she went to Bali to seek refuge till her husband returned home after finishing some important task. King Bali obliged. With her came the happiness and wealth. All auspicious things happened. On the Shravan Purnima, goddess tied the sacred thread to Bali and prayed for his well being. Bali was touched by the gesture. He accepted her as her sister and requested her to make a wish. At this, she revealed herself and told that it war Narayan himself guarding his Kingdom. King Bali immediately requested the Lord to return to his abode. From that day on, girls tie Rakhi to their brothers and seek blessings.

Taking a turn from the religious angle, the eve of Rakshabandhan got a universal appeal, and proved to be a great way of communal integration during India’s battle for freedom. On the eve of Bengal’s partition, as a part of the divide and rule policy taken by the British, Rabindranath Tagore gave a new meaning to this Rakshabandhan event. Rather than limiting it between the siblings only, he initiated the movement, where each one ties the Rakhi thread on the other, and hence, the unity irrespective of the communal discrimination was established. The spirit of unity, the spirit of brotherhood had triumphed then.

About a month before the festival of Rakhi, the market gets flooded with the exclusive Rakhi collection like Gold Rakhi, Silver Rakhi, Pearl Rakhi etc. with a portray of high creativity skills in Kids Rakhi.
